Britain’s National Spinal Injuries1 Center is pleased with2 its link to the Paralympic Games. The idea for the event began3 here 60 years ago4. Dot Tussler is the head5 ofphysical therapy6at the center. DOT TUSSLER: “We know some of those people competing, and we know that their journey7 started here, so we’re behind8 them all the way9.”
Dot Tussler says the hospital uses sports to help people recover from10 their injuries11. DOT TUSSLER: “We use sport as a vehicle12 for improving balance13, strength14, coordination, wheelchair15 skills16 and wheelchair mobility. As well as17 those physical attributes, you can then go on to build18 the funner19 element of doing things together20 in a group.”
The patients do that at a sports center that honors21 a refugee22 doctor who came toBritain23 from Nazi Germany. Dr. Ludwig Guttmann believed that sports would help heal24 his patients, both25 physically and emotionally. His beliefs26 led to27 the Paralympics, which take place28 shortly after29 the Olympics.
The games help patients like30 24-year-old Christopher Haynes believe they can lead31full lives32 again. He was injured33 in a diving accident34. He has faced35 a longrecovery period36 after many operations. CHRISTOPHER HAYNES: “You play the games that are suitable37 for you.
So it’s … because they’ve been doing it for so long38, they know exactly39 what you’re… because I’m tall40, because I’m young41, I’m suitable for, you know, wheelchair rugby.” Chris is ready42 to move out of43 the hospital. He wants to be part of the Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. CHRISTOPHER HAYNES: “It’s inspirational44. It, like, lets you know what you can do in three or four years. I need to start playing sports.There’s no reason45 I shouldn’t46. You know, back to work, get back to47 my social life,get myself48 a girlfriend. And if all goes well49, you know, try51 and aim for Rio.” I’m June Simms.
